Problem Based Learning (PBL)
Problem Based Learning is a student centered partnering pedagogy where students work with classmates to solve complex and authentic problems that help develop content knowledge as well as problem-solving, reasoning, communication, and self-assessment skills. Like may new pedagogies, the role of the teacher an student changes from that of a traditional classroom. In PBL teachers are guides and tutors and the students are researchers and project-designers. Problem Based Learning is a great way to engage students. It also develops 21st century skills needed to succeed in the real world. In PBL students are given a scenario then they identify the problem and design a plan to come up with a solution. Typically with PBL students work in groups/teams to work on a project. Problem Based Learning assignments can result in various outcomes. PBL requires the students to use critical thinking skills. This pedagogy was first used in medical schools and has now made its way into k-12 classrooms.
